10 Basic Steps to Help Prevent Identity Theft
- Check your account statements and billing cycles regularly. Any irregular spend on your accounts could be a sign that your account has been compromised. If your account statements are not delivered on time or do not get delivered at all, check with your creditors to see exactly why this has occurred.
- Have your Post delivered to a Private Box at your post office or get a Post-box with a lock. If you are going on holiday, have your post redirected or collected by a friend or family member.
- Check your Credit Report at least every 3 months. By actively reviewing your credit profile you can pick up on any irregularities sooner rather than later.
- Shred any documents that have financial or personal information on them that you do not need.
- Change your passwords every 60 days and use a combination of upper and lower case letters, special characters, numbers and symbols. Avoid using common passwords that you think may be easy to remember such as your pet’s name or date of birth.
- Don’t share too much personal information on social networking sites. When you post too much personal information online, Identity Thieves can piece together key information about you to answer security questions you may have in place with credit/ service providers.
- Password protect your cell phone. This is an obvious one to many but many of us choose the convenience of not having a password rather than being security conscious.
- Destroy any labels on prescription medication before placing them in the dustbin. The information on these items often times can display a lot of your personal details.
- Make use of Anti-Virus software and firewall software to prevent your computer being accessed by hackers. Keep this software up to date and run updates regularly.
- Be very cautious if you need to make use of public Wi-Fi. Avoid it if possible but if you need to make use of public Wi-Fi do not do online banking or access any sensitive information.
